About The Conservatory

The Facility
Officially opened in December 2004, The Patel Conservatory holds classes weekly, after school and on weekends in a beautiful, 45,000-square-foot facility attached to the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. The Conservatory's instructors are highly skilled artists and many are working professionals in the area of their expertise. There are studios and classrooms for dance, media arts, theater, on-camera acting and private lessons in all disciplines, plus a piano lab, a recording studio, a scene shop, a costume shop, a library and a "black box" theater.

With the construction of the new facility, the City of Tampa requires 1% of the vertical construction costs of new municipal building projects to be set aside for Public Art. Dollars generated by this ordinance are used for the commissioning, acquisition, installation, maintenance, administration, and insurance of art works, as well as for publicity and education about the City of Tampa’s art collection. The Patel Conservatory's contribution to Public Art is MARQUEE, an artwork by Tobey Archer. An artwork made of light, MARQUEE is highly visible and comprises carefully choreographed colored lights moving in opposite directions and at varied speeds on the buildings. The addition of MARQUEE makes the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center a visible, identifiable and unique landmark anchoring a corner of downtown Tampa. MARQUEE is sponsored by Verizon.

Mission and Philosophy
The Patel Conservatory will provide you with the tools to dream, reach, discover and create the performing arts.

  • DREAM — The Conservatory is the place to realize your dream. It is your artistic home. You or your child could begin the journey by attending a Center performance or coming to an open house. Or you could jump right in and sign up for a class like Acting, Group Voice, Rock School or any number of other classes or workshops designed for you.
  • REACH — In class, you begin to look at things in a new way, to take chances you've never taken before, to risk being exposed and to share a part of yourself previously reserved for you alone. You are free from your self-imposed limitations. You explore, discover and challenge yourself.
  • DISCOVER — You begin to see a pattern to your creative work. You begin to understand and develop technique. You practice. You ask questions. You gain confidence in your performance skills or see new confidence in your children. You continue to take classes, seeking all experiences that will enrich your new understanding. Maybe you try another discipline, knowing that it's the journey that's important, much more than being naturally good at something. Through doing, you'll learn.
  • CREATE — What has come into being is you — your life, your experiences, your stories. The Patel Conservatory has become your laboratory — for learning, practicing, creating, rehearsing and performing. You choreograph a dance, you sing a song, you write a play, and you integrate the arts into your life and contribute to your community.

At the Conservatory, we

  • Provide a nourishing environment with the finest educational and training opportunities.
  • Provide a place where creativity is celebrated, honored and revered.
  • Respect traditional performing arts as well as new forms.
  • Encourage students to experience all artistic disciplines in developing their own unique style.
  • Listen to students and help them to realize the practical steps necessary to make their visions a reality.
  • Instill in students a sense of pride that accompanies disciplined work habits and self-determination.
  • Offer arts opportunities for all ages and interests.
  • Provide a safe space for exploration and development.
  • Reinforce the guiding principle that artistic growth never ends and that unrealized ideas are natural components of artistic growth.
  • Develop a common artistic vocabulary so that we can communicate across disciplines.
  • Reinforce the principle that art is process, as well as product.
