Drs. Kiran and Pallavi Patel

DR. KIRAN C. PATEL, a board certified cardiologist, was born in Zambia, Africa where his Asian Indian parents migrated. He studied in Zambia under the British Educational System and obtained his diploma from Cambridge University and The University of London before attending Medical School at Gujarat University in India. Dr. Patel fulfilled his Internship in Africa and his residency in Internal Medicine in New Jersey in 1980. He completed a fellowship in the Cardiology program affiliated with the Columbia University of New York in 1982.

In 1974, Dr. Kiran Patel and his wife, Dr. Pallavi Patel, began private practice in Zambia, Africa. During his short stay in Zambia, Dr. Kiran Patel established multiple practices and employed other physicians and a dentist. He also served as medical director for two large industries on a contract basis. In 1978, the Drs. Relocated their family to the U.S. and both physicians immediately started their residencies in New Jersey. Drs. Patel successfully completed their post-graduate training, he in Cardiology and she in Pediatrics.

In 1982, Dr. Kiran Patel started the practice of medicine in Tampa, Fla. and focused on Cardiology. He has developed a very successful practice and has become a pre-eminent cardiologist in the Tampa Bay Area. Dr. Kiran Patel also developed a physician practice management company. His company expanded to 14 practices that were located in several counties adjoining the Tampa Bay area. These practices included Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Cardiology.

Dr. Kiran Patel partnered with a number of point-of-service locations to form a multi-specialty network. This network offered convenience and access to the patients for most medical services. Further, Dr. Kiran Patel actively pursued managed care contracts and has been very successful in expanding the growth of these practices. Today, these offices provide care to more than 80,000 patients.

While becoming a widely known and respected physician, Dr. Kiran Patel developed strong relationships with several HMOs and hospitals serving the market of his practice. Because of his success in managed care contracts and the expansion of his practice, a group of physicians sought his services to assist them with an HMO in New Port Richey, Fla. Dr. Kiran Patel accepted the assignment after negotiating a pre-determined purchase option of the company. The company was called Well Care HMO, Inc. (Well Care). Dr. Kiran Patel, the majority owner and Chairman of the Board, along with Rupesh Shaw, CEO, and Pradip Patel, President, started a Medicaid managed care company in 1992. This company grew to be the largest Medicaid provider in the state of Florida.

Dr. Kiran Patel turned around the struggling HMO, WellCare of New York and Connecticut (no affiliation to Well Care HMO, Florida). He worked with more than 95 hospitals and a few hundred physicians in settling past due medical claims. Dr. Kiran Patel provided an additional $15 million in equity through Conversion of Brown Brother’s (1818 Fund LP) notes. Additionally, he was instrumental in the removal of financial commitments, contingencies from the company and also negotiated the settlements of various legal claims. Dr. Kiran Patel infused $10 million of new capital and acquired 55% of the publicly held Well Care Management Group.

From 1995 to 2002, Dr. Kiran Patel built a billion-dollar company, providing service to more than 450,000 members, employing more than 1,200 employees and operating in Florida, New York and Connecticut.

Currently, Dr. Kiran Patel is serving as Chairman of Visionary Medical Systems. Utilizing his administrative and management skills and past experience in insurance, medical practice and HMOs, Dr. Kiran Patel believes The Visionary Office will allow physicians to reduce paperwork and devote more time to their patients.

Dr. Kiran Patel serves on many boards and is a member of the following organizations: Fellow of American College of Cardiology; American Medical Association, Member; American College of Physicians, Member; American Association of Physicians from the South East Asia, Past Chair Scholarship Committee.

DR. PALLAVI PATEL, a board-certified pediatrician, was born in India. She received her undergraduate degree from M.G. Science College, Gujarat University, in 1968, and attended Municipal Medical College of Gujarat University in Ammedabad, Gujarat, India. Dr. Pallavi Patel completed internships at St. Barnabas Hospital in New Jersey, School of Medicine Dentistry of New Jersey and Overlook Hospital in Summit, New Jersey, in affiliation with Columbia University in New York. She was in private practice in Kabwe, Zambia, from 1974 to 1978 and served as a part-time consultant physician from 1974 to 1978 for Kabwe Industrial Fabrics, Ltd. and Kapiri Glass Products, Ltd.

Dr. Pallavi Patel, along with her family: established a modern 50-bed charity hospital serving 100,000 villagers in India; provides funds to a recurring annual scholarship fund that allows underprivileged children to obtain a college education; funded the construction of the USF Charter School for Underprivileged Children in Hillsborough County and has sponsored 25 orphans from India to visit and perform a cross cultural program in the United States.

In addition, Dr. Pallavi Patel and her family were instrumental in the inauguration of the India Cultural Center in Tampa, Fla. She is a strong believer that the Indian culture must be maintained for those Indian families that have relocated to the United States of America. This facility will allow families and friends to meet, as well as fulfill the special needs of the people.

Dr. Pallavi Patel is a Fellow of American Academy of Pediatrics, a Member of the Florida Medical Association and a Patron Member of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin. She holds hospital privileges at University Community Hospital, St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital and St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. She is president and CEO of Stat Care and Bay Area Primary Care Association, Inc. with five locations across Tampa. Dr. Pallavi Patel is also a founder, trustee and administrator for the India Cultural Center. She is a member of the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center Board of Trustees, Shakti Krupa Charitable Foundation Board of Directors and the ICC Hope Scholarship Foundation Board of Directors.
